Saturday May 1st marked the third annual opening day ceremony for the Goffstown Babe Ruth Softball League at Goffstown High School. The 2010 team players, coaches, sponsors and board members were announced, as were the many volunteers who make the season possible.

The first pitch of the season was thrown by Butch Gifford, who has been involved in numerous capacities with the league since its inception. When the league started ten years ago with 2 teams and 22 players as part of the Kearsarge Mountain South League, Butch stepped up and started managing and coaching. He hasn't stopped since then, managing in the 8U, 10U, 12U and 16U divisions at one time or another, and has been a Goffstown Babe Ruth board member for several years. At times he has been involved with two teams as he has had daughters playing in two divisions at a time. Besides this he has also helped coach various ASA travel teams, all-star teams, his sons Little league, Babe Ruth teams and has spent several years as a coach in youth hockey programs.

Catching the first balls of the season were Butch’s three daughters, Lauren, Hannah and Shannon, who have each played Goffstown Babe Ruth Softball over the years.

GBRS thanks Butch for all he has done to help foster the organization, for helping to give the girls of Goffstown the opportunity to play softball at a competitive level, and for making Goffstown Softball the success that is has become.

Many thanks to all of the volunteers who helped and continue to help with work on the renovations and upgrades to the fields at Mountain View Middle School and Goffstown High School.
